Annie Sloan was born in Sydney in 1949 to a Scottish daddy and a Fijian mother, and invested part of her childhood in South Africa. Following 7 years of studying Art in England, Sloan turned her attention to decorative painting. Her very first book, The Complete Book of Decorative Paint Methods, was co-authored with Kate Gwynn and published in 1988.
Sloan then went on to develop her own brand name of paint, Chalk Paint, in 1990. Initially the paint was produced in Belgium. She opened her first shop in Headington, Oxford, in 2000, where she offered her paint, along with fabrics and ready-painted furniture. Her book Colour Recipes for Painted Furniture and More was published in 2013.
In 2015, Sloan introduced a 2nd brand of paint, Wall Paint, in Europe. Her organization is based in Oxford, England, which she keeps up her other half, David. In 2017, Sloan participated in a partnership with Oxfam to produce a brand-new colour called Lem Lem, inspired by Oxfam's Ethiopian Seed Job.
